For over 130 years, Mount Moriah has served as a Progressive Witness of Jesus Christ in Pembroke and North Bryan County. At Mount Moriah, you find yourself in a warm and welcoming environment that will allow you to experience real folks abiding in community, loving each other, and serving God. As a small congregation in a beautiful rural setting, we have convenient parking located near the front entrance for our first-time guests. Our Mount Moriah Ushers will be glad to help you find a seat for the worship service.

Beyond hospitality, Mount Moriah is committed to being Christian stewards of love. As such, we practice love, build the beloved community, and pursue social justice. We believe the overwhelming message of the Bible, in story after story, is that of God's radical love and welcome. Every time we think we know who's in and who's out, God does something to challenge those assumptions, unbind our hearts and minds from old ways of understanding, and draw the circle ever wider.

Our doors are wide open to people from all backgrounds, regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey. Together, we are striving to become a place where there's relevant teaching, heart-felt worship, honest friendships, constant prayer, and compassionate care. As we continue the year under the theme #Rooted2Rise, February invites us to consider how love sustains us and how history teaches us to love wisely and well. Love is not merely a feeling. It is a discipline, a decision, and a way of life shaped over time. As we reflect during Black History Month, we remember that love has been one of the most powerful tools for survival, resistance, and transformation.

Scripture teaches us that love is foundational to faithful living. In Mark 12:30–31, Jesus makes it plain. We are called to love the Lord our God with our whole self, heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This love is not sentimental or shallow. It is courageous, communal, and rooted in commitment. It shapes how we treat one another, how we respond to injustice, and how we remain human in a world that often denies dignity.

February’s focus calls us to reflect on love as an act of faith and a form of resistance. Black history reminds us that love has carried communities through oppression, sustained families under pressure, and inspired movements for freedom. From the wisdom of elders to the courage of everyday people, love has been expressed through sacrifice, mutual care, and an unwavering belief in a more just future.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, we expand our understanding of love beyond romance. We honor love that builds community, heals wounds, tells the truth, and seeks the well-being of others. This is the love that roots us deeply and enables us to rise together.
This month, we are invited to intentionally practice rooted love.

As we remember the legacy of Black faith, resilience, and creativity, we recommit ourselves to a love that is rooted in God and expressed in action. February reminds us that when love is grounded in justice and sustained by community, it becomes a force that shapes history and opens the way toward a future where all can flourish.

As we fast, pray, remember, and serve together, we deepen our roots in faith and love. And as we do, we prepare not simply to endure the year ahead, but to rise grounded, faithful, and free, bearing fruit that blesses our community and honors God.​

Building Fund

“Building on Faith, Preparing for the Future”
At the height of the pandemic, when times were uncertain and many walked away, those who remained at Mount Moriah made a bold commitment: to modernize our campus so that this 135-year-old church could continue to serve this present age with strength and excellence.
​
That commitment has already produced powerful results. With more than $125,000 invested, we have:

Installed a new energy-efficient heating and air system

Gutted and rebuilt the Fellowship Hall, Administrative spaces, and Classrooms from the studs up

Brought electrical, plumbing, and gas systems to modern code

Renovated every bathroom with new fixtures and ceramic tile

Upgraded the kitchen with new cabinets, flooring, and appliances
-
Relocated and refreshed the Church Office

Renovated the Pastor's Study to host guests and serve our families.

Revitalized classrooms for Youth Ministry and Christian education

New computers, phones, and security systems

New Church signage outside and directional signage inside.

Upgraded high-speed internet with expanded wifi capabilities

Created a Conference Room honoring Pastor Eugene Amos Hagins

Laid new hardwood flooring and carpet throughout the Fellowship Hall, Administrative spaces, and classrooms.

Yet the vision is not complete. The next phase requires replacing the entire exterior roofing system, ensuring our renewed spaces are protected for generations to come. The final phase will fully modernize our Sanctuary from top to bottom, creating a sacred space that is welcoming, accessible, and designed for the worship needs of families today.
​
This is more than renovation—it is renewal. More than construction—it is a covenant. Every gift to the Building Fund is a seed of faith, planted in the soil of our 135-year witness.

About Community
Established in 1890, the Mount Moriah Baptist Church has stood as a physical representation of the hope and determination of the African-American spirit. Through the years as a school, community center, and civil rights organizing meeting hall, Mount Moriah has always served people through its Watch, Witness, and Worship.

At Mount Moriah, all our resources are utilized to provide a Christ-centered setting where people in this community can be redeemed to a personal relationship with Christ, reconciled to God and his people, restored to wholeness, to well-being, and revived for a full life involved in service to others.

Our
The Reverend Dr. Francys Johnson well serves Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. The pulpit of Mount Moriah has long provided community-wide leadership.
Over the last 25 years, Dr. Johnson has also exemplified the values of Christian service with humility before the congregation of Pembroke. He is also the Senior Pastor of the Magnolia Baptist Church of Statesboro. First Lady Meca Williams-Johnson’s particular success in youth programming and academic mentoring is an asset to the ministries of Mount Moriah. Further, they are ambassadors of our faith community to the region and nation.
